EU puLling out all the stops to eradicate starvation

Brussels, 16/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On World Food Day, the European Commission declared that the EU was determined to pull out all the stops to eradicate hunger in the world.

In a joint statement, Andris Piebalgs, the European Commission for Development, and Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, pointed out that there were still 500 days to go to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by the 2015 deadline. They provided assurances that; “the European Union will continue to play a leading role in food and nutrition security. For the millions of children under the age of five threatened by malnutrition, for those affected by the conflicts in Syria, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Mali or Somalia, for those whose livelihoods are taken away from them by the growing impact of climate change.

They added that, “We must do more, and we will. In the next seven years, food and nutrition security and agriculture will be a priority in our cooperation with more than 60 of our partner countries”. The two Commissioners are convinced that, “Eradicating hunger is a fight we can and must win” and that this will be one of the objectives to be pursued after the MDGs. (AN)
