16/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - Decision on 2014 Sakharov Prize winner postponed. The decision of the European Parliament's president and group leaders on the winner of the 2014 Sakharov Prize has been postponed until Tuesday 21 October, European Parliament President Martin Schulz has announced. The decision should have been taken on 16 October. “The dissolution of the EFDD Group and the new weighting of votes forced us to postpone the decision on the Sakharov Prize laureate”, Schulz stated. The three nominees are EuroMaidan - the Ukrainian pro-European movement; Denis Mukwege - the gynaecologist and human rights activist from Congo; and Leyla Yunus - the human rights activist from Azerbaijan (see EUROPE 11162). The Sakharov Prize will be awarded at the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg on 26 November. (CG)
