Brussels, 16/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 15 October, the European Commission concluded that certain service and commercialisation agreements entered into between the operator of Altenburg-Nobitz airport, in Germany, and the airline Ryanair/AMS gave the latter an undue advantage worth in the region of €300,000. A commercialisation agreement concluded in 2010, together with two agreements dating from 2003, had no prospect of returning a profit to the airport, “even in the long term”, the Commission states in a press release. The aid which is incompatible with the single market must therefore be paid back to Germany. In early October, the Commission had already announced that Ryanair was to reimburse €500,000 in incompatible aid received from the airport of Zweibrücken, also in Germany. The investigation closed by the Commission on 15 October also led it to conclude that the state aid measures granted to the operator of Altenburg-Nobitz airport were compatible with EU rules on state aid, as they improve the connectivity of the region without unduly distorting competition on the single market.
