Brussels, 14/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 13 October, Lithuania, supported by other Baltic states and Poland, made a request at the Agriculture Council, for an increase in co-financing rates for measures to tackle African Swine Fever (ASF). This country also called for the extension of Community support for other measures (prevention and slaughter). ASF is a serious disease that affects pigs and its economic repercussions are considerable. It was in Lithuania that African Swine Fever was detected for the first time in an EU country, at the beginning of 2014. Other countries (Austria, France, Spain and Ireland but also Denmark and the United Kingdom) supported Lithuania in its approach. (LC)
