Brussels, 07/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - Much ado about nothing? Spain's Miguel Arias Cañete, the Commissioner designate for Climate Action and Energy, has no conflicts of interest, ruled the 'legal affairs' committee of the European Parliament on Monday 6 October, validating his declaration of financial interests by 11 votes in favour (five against, three abstentions), to the great consternation of the Greens. The horizon is therefore clear for the candidate whose independence was called into question at his action-packed hearing of 1 October, due notably to his brother-in-law's links to the oil industry (EUROPE 11168). The two competent committees (ENVI and ITRE) were to assess Cañete's performance this Tuesday. (AN)
