Brussels, 07/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is ready to begin negotiations with the Council and Commission on preventing customs fraud and drawing up an information security network strategy. On Tuesday 7 October, the EP's internal market committee (IMCO) granted a negotiating brief to Liisa Jaakonsaari (S&D, Finland) and Andreas Schawb (EPP, Germany), the rapporteurs on the subjects, by 28 votes in favour, with 2 against. The first initiative will involve building mutual assistance between member states and the European Commission to improve the fight against customs fraud. The latter will involve member states developing a cyber security strategy and contact points network on this subject. Gas, electricity and transport infrastructure will also be called on to guarantee their system security and inform the public when incidents occur. (MD)
