Brussels, 07/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The MEPs from the committee on culture and education at the European Parliament were not won over by the Hungarian Tibor Navracsics, at his hearing on 1 October. Although they feel that he is suitable to become a commissioner (by 15 votes in favour, 10 against and two abstentions), they do not want him as Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and - most importantly - Citizenship (by 14 votes against, 12 in favour and one abstention). The votes of the Socialists (S&D) and Liberals (ALDE) swung the balance against him. Following his hearing, the MEPs subjected him to a further salvo of written questions on his close relationship with Hungary's President Viktor Orban, whose anti-freedom policies have been decried throughout Europe. However, despite his promises to be a committed commissioner at the service of the citizens, he did not pass the test. Navracsics' fate is now in the hands of the president-designate of the future European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, and the changes he will make to his team so that it can be sworn in as a whole at a plenary session to be held on 22 October.
