Unemployment stable in eurozone, in freefall in EU

Brussels, 30/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - The unemployment rate in the eurozone remains stable, at 11.5% in August, compared to July 2014, whilst over the last year it is slightly down (12% in August 2013), according to figures published on Tuesday 30 September by the European Statistical Office, Eurostat. In the EU as a whole, the unemployment rate in August reached its lowest level since February 2012, 10.1%, compared to 10.2% in July 2014. The lowest unemployment rates were to be seen in Austria (4.7%) and in Germany (4.9%). The unemployment rate was highest in Greece and Spain (at 27% and 24.4% respectively). Eurostat also added that, over the last year, the rate has fallen in 22 states and risen in four others (such as Finland, from 8.2% in 2013 to 8.6% and France, from 10.2% to 10.5%). Portugal and Spain experienced the sharpest drops in the unemployment rate (from 16.1% to 14% and from 26.1% to 24.4% respectively). (EL)
