Brussels, 30/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle welcomed the holding of Gay Pride in Belgrade on Sunday 28 September. “We pay tribute to the professionalism of the security forces, providing protection to the participants”, Füle stated. In his view, the commitment of the Serbian security forces, together with that of the parliament and prominent political representatives, in addition to that of the diplomatic community and civil society in Serbia, “marked a substantial improvement towards the effective exercise of LGBTI rights and, more broadly, of human rights”. Several hundred people took part in the first Serbian Gay Pride in four years. The last parade, in 2010, was marked by serious violence and subsequent Gay Pride parades were banned for security reasons. (CG)
