Pricing for Felbertauern Tunnel intrigues Commission

Umea, 26/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Austria will be obliged to review its toll system for the Felbertauern Tunnel in the Alps, as the European Commission has criticised the fact that the pricing in force differs depending on where the vehicle is registered.

On 25 September, the European Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Vienna, which now has two months to respond, or risk having to explain itself before the European Court of Justice. It is concerned that the difference in the tariff applied to foreign drivers is disproportionate and distorts the principle of non-discrimination on the grounds of nationality, under article 18 of the TFEU. The fact that the Commission is taking this issue so seriously should also strike a chord in Berlin, as Germany is considering a car tax sticker which would disadvantage foreign drivers. (MD)
