Umea, 26/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - Three countries are not in compliance with European legislation on the rights of passengers. Italy has not fully transposed the rules applicable to sea or inland waterway travel, as it should have done by the end of 2012. There is no Italian authority responsible for handling travellers' complaints, or any rules laying down the penalties incurred.
Greece and Luxembourg have not fully applied the rules to protect passengers travelling by bus or coach. Athens has not appointed an authority to enforce these rules and Luxembourg has not laid down the penalties for failing to respect the regulation in question. All three countries must comply or provide the Commission with justifications within two months, the European Executive informed them in reasoned opinions dated Thursday 25 September. If this deadline is not respected, it may bring the countries before the Court of Justice of the EU. (MD)
