EU condemns murder of British humanitarian worker

Strasbourg, 15/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 14 September, the European Union condemned the “atrocious” murder of British humanitarian worker David Haines, “who dedicated his life to helping people in need in Syria and in many other places”. Haines was murdered in Syria by Islamic State (IS). A video in which he is beheaded was published on line on 13 September. This “vicious murder is another demonstration of ISIL's determination to pursue and extend its terror strategy, in breach of all universally recognised values and rights”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton in a press release. Ashton's spokesperson also condemned all the other acts of terrorism for which Al-Quaeda affiliated groups in Iraq and Syria have claimed full responsibility.

“The European Union is more committed than ever to supporting international efforts to fight all the terrorist groups that endanger regional and global stability”, Ashton's spokesperson stated, adding that, together with international and regional partners, “the EU will spare no effort to ensure that an end is put to this atrocious terrorist campaign and all perpetrators are held accountable”.

Several heads of state and government and foreign affairs ministers also condemned this murder.

An international conference on peace and security in Iraq, linked to the threat of IS, was held in Paris on Monday 15 September. (CG)
