Brussels, 15/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - The leader of the lower chamber of the Polish parliament, Ewa Kopacz, was asked by the head of state, Bronislaw Komorowski, on Monday 15 September, to form a new government. Kopacz will have two weeks to present her government to Komorowski, but the president expects to be able to swear in the new cabinet on 22 September.
The appointment of outgoing Prime Minister Donald Tusk to the post of president of the European Council necessitated the formation of this new government.
According to speculation in the Polish media, several portfolios are likely to change hands in the new executive, including home affairs and possibly also foreign affairs, which has been held for seven years by Radoslaw Sikorski. Sikorski could replace Kopacz as leader of the lower chamber. The new head of government is a close ally of Tusk and will also replace him as leader of the Centre-Right Civic Platform (PO) party. (LC)
