Google - Almunia's change of heart welcomed

Brussels, 09/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 9 September, MEPs Ramon Tremosa i Balcells (ALDE, Spain) and Andreas Schwab (EPP, Germany) welcomed the apparent change of direction taken the day before by the European Commission on the Google dossier. The American giant is accused of abusing its dominant position in the field of online research and related advertising. In February of this year, it proposed a third series of commitments to the Commission. Initially won over by its proposals, the Commission confirmed on Monday evening that it was in contact with Google “to see if they are ready to offer solutions”, said Antoine Colombani, spokesperson to Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia. In an interview with Bloomberg, Almunia had previously stated that the new arguments and data put forward by the plaintiffs should now be assessed and that the Commission was committed to seeing whether Google can find solutions to concerns it feels justified (see EUROPE 11150). Tremosa and Schwab said that, as it stands, the deal would “harm European digital SMEs and the jobs linked to them”, as it will have “calamitous consequences for new and innovative start-ups”. In July, they got together to call on Almunia to leave this dossier to his successor within the Juncker Commission. They have pledged to keep the pressure on the next commissioner, during the hearing before the European Parliament. (EL)
