Brussels, 14/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 July, the Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Italy calling on it to fully transpose the “authorisation directive” on taxes imposed on telecoms operators. The demand particularly involves criteria for applying administrative taxes that are likely to create barriers to market entrants because they disproportionately target small network operators. Italian rules do not include transparency requirements either, which would consist of publishing an annual balance of administrative taxes deducted and the administrative costs borne by the department of economic development. Italy has two months to inform the European Commission of its intentions in this connection. If no satisfactory response is forthcoming, the Commission might decide to refer Italy to the European Court of Justice. (IL)
