On Tuesday 8 July, the Council of the EU appointed ambassador Herbert Salber to the post of the EU's new Special Representative for South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia. His initial term will run until 28 February 2015. The German diplomat has previously held office at the OSCE, amongst others. “His mission will be to help towards a peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region, including the crisis in Georgia and the conflict of Nagorno-Karabagh (between Armenia and Azerbaijan: Ed) and to promote regional cooperation”, the Council explained. “In particular, the Special Representative co-chairs and participates, on behalf of the EU, in the international discussions of Geneva on the consequences of the 2008 conflict in Georgia”, the Council added.
