Brussels, 08/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - Following on from the association agreement signed between the EU and Ukraine, a Committee of the Regions delegation travelled to Kiev on 4 July. The delegation was headed by the new president of the advisory body, Michel Lebrun, and will be involved in supporting the country's efforts to promote the decentralisation process. Lebrun met the acting prime minister, Volodymyr Hroysmann, and gave assurances that the reform projects were ambitious because they are “anchored in the subsidiarity principle and inspired by the multilevel approach towards governance”. The Committee of the Regions formulated several useful proposals for decentralisation in Ukraine, such as enhancing the democratic responsibility of regional decision-makers, transferring financial and human resources to the regional level, providing a clear definition of the remit of the new regional councils and more systematic consultation of civil society.
