Brussels, 04/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - Jean-Claude Juncker wants applications from women to make up his team at the European Commission. This is to avoid his being rejected by the European Parliament if parity between men and women is not respected, French news agency AFP reports. “In the light of intentions expressed by the governments, he fears ending up with only two or three women in his team when he asks for his team's investiture in October at the European Parliament, and being rejected - justifiably - for the non-respect of parity”, said a source close to Juncker, the former prime minister of Luxembourg. The college of commissioners currently has nine women among its 28 members. In order to be sure that parity can at least be approached - if not reached - Juncker has asked the member states to send him three names for commissioners - including one woman - sources have said. Currently only the names of Federica Mogherini (Italy) and Kristalina Georgieva (Bulgaria) are doing the rounds as potential female commissioners (Mogherini as a potential successor to Catherine Ashton as vice-president of the Commission and high representative for foreign and security policy, and Georgieva as a returning commissioner).
