Cooperation in fisheries

Brussels, 27/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 26 June, the EUand Algeria took stock of the Algeria-EU “twinning project” in fisheries and fish resources. A specific meeting took place in Algiers and was attended by EU representatives, to mark the end of this two-year project.

The project led to the “drafting of a research strategy, which will accompany the new roadmap for the sector up to 2020”, said Algerian Minister for Fisheries and Fish Resources Sid Ahmed Ferroukhi, reported by the local media. “Intensive work is being carried out by national and European experts to draft a strategy and operational research programme for the fisheries and fish resources sector”, he told the closing ceremony of the twinning project with the EU.

Launched in 2012, the project aims to “reinforce the capacities of the national research centre for the development of fisheries and fish farming” (known by its French acronym, CNRDPA). Devised for a period of 24 months under the support programme for the implementation of the association agreement (P3A), it covered all regions and areas affected by fishing activities. It also covers the organisation of university research networks on fisheries. “Algeria needs a leading research body to respond to the expectations of both the sector and the government and to take its place in the regional scientific community”.
