27/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Consultation on transparency in mining industries. On Wednesday 25 June, the European Commission launched a public consultation exercise on the equivalence of non-EU countries' publication of information on a country-by-country basis by the mining and forestry industries. Recent EU legislation will require European companies active in these industries to provide details annually of all payments, taxes and bonuses of over €100,000 paid, project by project, to non-EU countries (see EUROPE 10945 and 10865). Like a similar US law, the measure aims to provide information to help NGOs and the people of third countries to hold governments to account with a view to stamping out corruption. (MB)
