Provisional picture of college reshuffle forming

Brussels, 24/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 24 June, the European Commission reiterated that that there was a step to be taken before the arrival at the College of the successors to those commissioners who are preparing to take up their roles as MEPs in the European Parliament. It is in fact up to the Parliament to approve this decision - which it will do at its second plenary session on 14-17 July. However, the departing commissioners will take up their seats in the Parliament on 1 July. This is the case for Olli Rehn, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs. Rehn will be replaced by his fellow Finn, Jyrki Katainen, who has left his position as Finland's prime minister in order to join the Commission. It is up to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso to decide this week which commissioners already in place will take on the portfolios of their departing colleagues during this bridging period of a fortnight. The most likely scenario is that Siim Kallas, European Commissioner for Transport, will provisionally take on the portfolio of economic and monetary affairs - as was the case during Rehn's electoral leave.
