Luxembourg, 24/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 23 June, the Council decided to extend Stavros Lambrinidis' mandate, originally due to run until 30 June 2014, as Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights until 28 February 2015. Lambrinidis was appointed to this newly created post on 25 July 2012 (see EUROPE 10663).
The special representative's mission is to strengthen the effectiveness, presence and visibility of the EU in the field of protecting and promoting human rights in the world. His mission is also to increase the EU's contribution to strengthening democracy and institutions, and to increase its contribution to the rule of law, to good governance and the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the world, as well as to strengthen the coherence of action conducted by the EU as regards human rights and the integration of human rights in all areas of the EU's external action, states the Council decision published in the Official Journal on 24 June.
The financial reference amount intended to cover spending linked to the EUSR's mandate from 1 July 2014 until 28 February 2015 is €550,000. (CG)
