Brussels, 07/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - The new EU regulation which will provide tighter rules on shipments of waste within the EU and to developing countries, in an effort to prevent illegal transfers has now been formally adopted (see EUROPE 11065). First reading adoption came on Tuesday 6 May, without debate, on the sidelines of the Ecofin Council.
This legislation (European Parliament and Council regulation amending Regulation (EC) No. 1013/2006 on shipments of waste) will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal and will apply from 1 January 2016.
Inspection programmes will have to be introduced by member states by 1 January 2017 and regularly updated at least every three years. This regulation will be reviewed by the European Commission before 2020. (AN)
