Brussels, 06/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday evening 5 May at the Burgtheater in Vienna, Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Culture and Plácido Domingo, the opera singer and President of Europa Nostra, presented the prizes to the 27 winners of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards 2014. The list of prizewinners was revealed on 20 March last (see EUROPE 11044). The six “Grand Prix” laureates selected by independent experts are: 1) in Conservation: Walser Houses - preservation of vernacular architecture in Alagna Valsesia, Italy; Dragomirna Church - restoration of the 17th century frescoes, Suceava, Romania; and the Cooperative Wineries Conservation Programme, Spain; 2) Research: research on the Roman vaulted construction in the Peloponnese, Greece; 3) Dedicated service: Heritage Association “Kempens Landscape”, Belgium; 4) Education, training and awareness-raising: Raising Awareness Project “Passage: From a Rusty City to a New Miskolc”, Hungary. The public choice award was made on the basis of an online poll on the Europa Nostra website and presented to one of the six Grand Prix laureates: the Dragomirna Church and the restoration of the 17th century frescoes. During the ceremony, Commissioner Vassiliou stated that “Europe's heritage is the envy of the world - and these projects are the best of the best. It is important that we celebrate the talent of our superb craftspeople and professionals, as well as the wonderful, tireless work of volunteers”. (IL)
