Meeting in May on association agreement issues

Brussels, 25/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 24 April, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle stated that the issues on the association agreement between the EU and the Republic of Moldova will be “discussed in detail at the meeting scheduled in May” between President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and Moldova's Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, with the main commissioners and respective Moldovan ministers.

“Moldova's efforts to implement the European values make it an important partner for the European Union and a front-runner in the Eastern Partnership”, said Füle, at the end of his meeting with Moldova's President Nicole Timofti.

Füle hailed the regime allowing movement without a visa between the EU and Moldova due come into force on 28 April. “This remarkable result has been obtained in record time. It proves Moldova's maturity and ability to succeed at the international level”, he added.

Füle also stated that implementation of the association agreement, which is due to be signed in June at the latest, and the establishment of a visa-free regime will also create “conditions for finding a solution for Transnistria while respecting the internationally recognised borders of Moldova”.
