On Friday 25 April, Alain Lamassoure, the lead candidate of the UMP party in the Île-de-France region for the European elections, accused French President François Hollande of being “non-existent” on the EU scene. The EU “has been very unpopular for two years because François Hollande is no longer fulfilling France's obligations to Europe”, said Lamassoure. “It is scandalous that the government has not, as is usually the case for all elections, organised a public information campaign to tell people about what's at stake” in the elections of 25 May, the former minister lamented.
