20/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - Cyprus taken to Court of Justice about oil reserves. On 20 February, the European Commission decided to take Cyprus to the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to transpose Directive 2009/11/EC on oil reserves - a directive that the member states were supposed to have transposed by 31 December at the latest. The directive requires member states to maintain minimum stocks of crude oil and petroleum products to ensure security of oil supply in case of possible disruptions. Cyprus' failure to transpose the directive led the Commission to send the country a letter of formal notice in January 2013 and a reasoned opinion in June 2013. Despite this opening of infringement proceedings, Cyprus has to date not notified the Commission of any transposition measures. (EH/transl.fl)
