SECTORAL POLICIES / (ae) energy

20/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - Ireland taken to Court of Justice about internal market. On 20 February, the European Commission decided to take Ireland to the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to fully transpose the electricity directive (2009/72/EC) - a directive that the member states were supposed to have fully transposed into national law by 3 March 2011 at the latest. While the Commission recognises that the Irish authorities have already transposed a “considerable amount” of the directive, it criticises Ireland for being slow to transpose the provisions relating to the rules on the unbundling of energy operators' supply and transmission systems. The Commission proposes a daily penalty of €20,358 - which takes into account the duration and gravity of the infringement. In the case of an affirmative judgment from the Court, the daily penalty is to be paid from the date of the judgment to the transposition date. (EH/transl.fl)
