Luxembourg taken to court over fixed term contracts

Brussels, 20/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 20 February, the European Commission decided to refer Luxembourg to the Court of Justice of the EU for breaching its obligations under the fixed-term work directive (1999/70/EC) to effectively protect certain fixed-term workers.

In particular, the Commission underlines the explicit exclusion from national legislation of certain staff in the entertainment sector from protection against abusive renewals of fixed-term employment contracts. It also notes that insufficient provisions in national legislation fail to ensure that fixed-term staff are informed when an employer makes permanent vacancies available. In April 2013, the Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Luxembourg. Despite this, Luxembourg failed to provide information about measures taken to ensure compliance. (OL/transl.fl)
