Brussels, 19/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 18 February, the European Commission gave the go-ahead to a Polish scheme for the orderly winding-up of failing cooperative banks, saying that the scheme complied with the EU rules on state aid to banks during the crisis. The scheme enables Poland to apply aid to transfer some or all of a cooperative bank's assets to a buyer by means of a call for tender. The Commission says that this should allow the best value to be assured for the assets and to keep the aid to the strict minimum to ensure an orderly resolution of the bank, preventing any purchaser from gaining unfair economic advantage by buying up under-valued assets. The Commission will re-examine the scheme's compatibility after 30 June 2014 in the light of the regulatory and economic environment at the time. (FG/transl.fl)
