Brussels, 14/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - In spring 2014, there will be a second series of coordinated checks in the member states of the EU to detect any cases of food fraud using horsemeat. The experts of the member states, meeting within the Standing Committee on the Food Chain of the EU on Thursday 13 February, approved the recommendation of the European Commission to this effect.
The results of this DNA testing exercise, which will be coordinated by the Commission, will be gathered and published by the Commission in July. The first series of tests carried out in 2013 following the scandal of horse meat sold as beef in ready meals revealed that 4.6% of the samples tested contained undeclared horsemeat (see EUROPE 10828).
