Brussels, 14/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - A special Mediterranean agricultural network has been set up, coordinated by CIHEAM (Centre International des Hautes Etudes Agricoles Méditerranéennes), which will work with the secretariat of the Rome-based multilateral AMIS initiative (Agricultural Markets Information System), the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the European Commission.
The formal decision to launch the new network was made at a meeting in Paris on 22 and 23 January 2014 of CIHEAM member states, backed by the French agriculture ministry.
The network will aim to encourage cooperation and the sharing of experience among national farm market information systems, said CIHEAM member state farm ministers in Malta in September 2012. A press release explains that the network will initially focus on cereals (wheat, corn, barley and rice) because these are crucial for food security in the Mediterranean region. (FB/transl.fl)
