Congratulations from Council of the European Union

Brussels, 11/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - “The EU congratulates Tunisia on its adoption of its new democratic constitution guaranteeing fundamental freedoms, the rule of law, separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary”, stated the EU foreign affairs ministers, who met in Brussels on Monday 10 February.

In the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council, the ministers believe that “the constitution is an important step forward in Tunisia's democratic transition”. In a regional context beset with problems, this constitution brings hope, in the ministers' view, and “sets an example for people struggling peacefully for their fundamental rights and freedoms to be recognised”. In the conclusions, the EU expresses its sincere congratulations on this “remarkable” result and wishes the Tunisian people every success in realising the democratic aspirations born of the 2011 revolution, “which set off a transition process that extends beyond its own borders”.

The EU pays tribute to the National Constituent Assembly and to the new government which was formed after the forced departure of Islamists and which is composed of non-partisan people who are committed to not standing for the upcoming elections. “The EU reiterates its support for the transition process and its commitment to accompany Tunisia in preparing for its upcoming elections, which must allow the Tunisian people to choose their leaders freely”. The Council calls on the Tunisian government, in consultation with all social partners, to press ahead with the measures necessary “to promote economic recovery and employment”. The Council commits to offering direct aid - which the Tunisians hope will be substantial. (FB/transl.fl)
