Agriculture ministers meet in Algiers (CIHEAM)

Brussels, 05/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Agriculture Ministers of 13 Mediterranean countries, including the EU member states which belong to this region, will meet for the 10th annual session of the CIHEAM (the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies, known by its French acronym) in Algiers on 6 February.

According to a press release, the discussions will focus on sustainable food security for the Mediterranean basin. The issues of agricultural production, the preservation of natural resources and the quality of foods will be the main themes of this discussion.

Ministers will also discuss how to tackle food wastage, green growth and inclusive growth for rural areas. The ministers will also discuss cooperation projects to be implemented in the multilateral Mediterranean framework as regards agricultural, food and rural development.

The meeting was preceded by a technical seminar on 4 and 6 February on the development of rural areas in the Mediterranean.

The first meeting of the Agriculture Ministers of the CIHEAM was held in Rome in 1999. Subsequent sessions took place in Rabat in 2000, Athens in 2001, Beirut in 2002, Paris in 2004, Cairo in 2006, Saragossa in 2008, Istanbul in 2010 and, lastly, Valletta in 2012. (FB/transl.fl)
