26/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - Ashton deplores latest execution. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton spoke with regret on 24 November of the execution of Muhammad Abdul Hafeez of Pakistan, in Indonesia on 17 November 2013. “This is the fifth execution since Indonesia resumed executions in March this year, after four years. This is a step backwards and goes against the global abolitionist trend”, Ashton said. She calls on Indonesia to “return to its previous moratorium policy, and to consider joining the wide community of states that have abolished the death penalty entirely”. The EU, she said, is opposed to capital punishment in all cases and without exception. Hafeez, who was 44, was sentenced to death in 2001 for drug trafficking. (CG/transl.jl)
