Brussels, 26/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 27 November, the EU Justice and Fundamental Rights Commissioner will unveil a batch of draft legislation to ensure access for all to justice and the right to a fair trial. Three draft directives will be unveiled on a) respect of the assumption of innocence, b) measures to ensure young people's rights are guaranteed and c) legal aid. In addition, there are two recommendations, one on vulnerable suspects, like the disabled, and one on legal aid. The Commission has already unveiled a series of draft items of legislation on access to a lawyer at the start of questioning and the right to interpreting and translation services. There is also a roadmap for the victims of crime. The draft directive on the assumption of innocence will ensure that all member states assume a suspect's innocence because some member states take a different approach and some do not ensure innocence is assumed, as was seen when the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights ruled against Belgium in 2010 on this very issue.
