Brussels, 26/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Sport Council on Tuesday 26 November adopted a recommendation on the promotion of physical activity for health. The recommendation encourages member states to follow a cross-cutting approach in the fields of sport, health, education, the environment and transport, and defines a framework for follow-up on general aspects for the promotion of a physical activity as being good for health and that all member states can undertake. Although it is largely recognised that engaging in a physical activity is good for health, 60% of all citizens admit they do only a little or sometimes no physical exercise. Aware of this problem, member states are making an effort to promote good healthy physical activity but several remain faced with difficulties when it comes to implementing certain measures. The recommendation highlights actions and instruments adopted by the EU that can back up and complement national measures: - recommendations on physical activity aiming to allow citizens to make sport a part of their daily life, the EU work plan in favour of sport, and the communication on “Developing the European Dimension in sport”.
