Protection of several geographical indications

Brussels, 15/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission recently approved registration requests for 16 new denominations in the list of protected denominations of origin (PDO), protected geographical indications (PGI) and traditional specialty guaranteed (TSG).

The requests relate to: France: “Rillettes de Tours” (PGI), cooked prepared meat from the region of Tours; Germany: “Westfälischer Knochenschinken” (PGI) ham and the “Stromberger Pflaume” plum (PDO); Spain: “Pan de Alfacar” (PGI) bread and “Queso Los Beyos” (PGI) cheese; Portugal: “Travia da Beira Baixa” (PDO), a by-product of the production of the PDO cheese “Queijos da Beira Baixa”, and “Carne de Bravo do Ribatejo” beef (PDO); Netherlands: “Basterdsuiker” (TSG) a by-product of sugar; Lithuania: “Lietuviskas varskès suris” (PGI) cheese; Italy: “Melone Mantovano” (PGI) melon and pasta “Maccheroncini di Campofilone” (PGI); Hungary: “Tepertos pogacsa”, a savoury scone made with pork cracklings; and, for Belgium: “Poperingse hopscheuten”/“Poperingse hoppoescheuten” (PGI) a hop product. The United Kingdom gained protection under PDO of the “Fal Oyster”. These denominations will be added to the list of 1,200 products already protected under legislation on the protection of PDO, PGI and TSG. (LC/transl.jl)
