13/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - EU welcomes end of state of emergency. The EU took “positive note” of the end of the state of emergency in Egypt on Tuesday 12 November, the spokesperson to High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton has announced. The EU has called for the state of emergency to be lifted on several occasions. It was brought in on 14 August and an Egyptian court ruled that it expired on 12 November. The government announced that it would respect the decision, but that it was waiting for official notification before applying it. The spokesperson to the high representative reiterated that the EU “stresses the importance that other draft legislation, e.g. regulating protests, is in line with international human rights standards”. Clashes continue at demonstrations between supporters and opponents of the deposed Egyptian President Morsi. (CG/transl.fl)
