Local authorities at ready on jobs for young people

Brussels, 13/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - While an inter-governmental meeting was discussing youth unemployment in Paris on Tuesday 12 November (see EUROPE 10961), the Committee of the Regions (CoR) was highlighting the role the regions could play in getting young people back on the jobs market. A conference on this issue was organised by the CoR in Brussels on Tuesday 12 November, in cooperation with the German National Agency for the European “Youth in Action” programme.

The leader of the Socialist Group in the CoR, Karl-Heinz Lambertz, from Belgium, pointed out that the introduction of the youth guarantee was an important step forward for tackling youth unemployment but that “the focus must be on ensuring that local and regional authorities have the capacity to implement these guarantees and creating clear perspectives for a more social Europe”. His counterpart at the EPP Group, Michael Schneider, from Germany, argued that the measures introduced should be tailored to local contexts. (MD/transl.fl)
