Brussels, 06/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 5 November, the European Transport Commissioner, Siim Kallas, announced that the EU is on track to achieve the target of halving road fatalities by 2020, compared to 2010 figures. At a road safety event organised by DEKRA, a vehicle inspection group, he welcomed the fact that “travelling on EU roads has become much less of a life-threatening risk”, with the lowest ever recorded rate of deaths on the road in 2012 (55 deaths per million drivers). The EU must not, however, rest on its laurels, and the commissioner stressed the initiatives the EU has taken to achieve these results. Other projects are underway to make road transport safer, he noted, such as the initiative for a joint definition of serious injuries as well as cross-border sanctions for motoring offences, which will enter into force on 7 November (EUROPE will return to this).
