Brussels, 06/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - The political idea expressed by European Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Viviane Reding of creating a European intelligence service would require a change to the European treaties, said Reding's spokesperson Mina Andreeva on Wednesday 6 November.
This personal opinion of Reding was not discussed the same day by the College of Commissioners, however.
In the face of recurrent revelations about the US spying on Europe, Reding said in an interview published in the Greek newspaper Naftemporiki that she believed it necessary to strengthen Europe's intelligence capacities by means of an agreement on enhanced cooperation between member states,
“My long term proposal would therefore be to set up a European Intelligence Service by 2020”, she said. (MB/transl.fl)
