Brussels, 23/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 23 October, the European Parliament adopted a joint resolution from the EPP, ALDE, S&D, EFD, GUE/NGL and Greens/EFA Groups on migratory flows in the Mediterranean, particularly in the light of the tragic events off the coast of Lampedusa. According to the Parliament, the member states need to respect their international obligations as regards rescuing the lives of people in danger at sea. “Lampedusa should be a turning point for Europe”, according to the Parliament, for which “the only means of avoiding another tragedy is to adopt a coordinated strategy based on solidarity and responsibility and underpinned by common instruments”. MEPs also stress that the distribution of asylum seekers is “one of the most concrete forms of solidarity and of sharing responsibility” (our translation throughout). In addition, the MEPs call on the member states to amend their legislation immediately so as to ensure that no one is sanctioned for helping migrants in danger at sea. (LC/transl.fl)
