Commission reveals winners of 2014 EBBA

Brussels, 15/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou revealed the list of winners of the 2014 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBAs) on 15 October. The EBBAs celebrate the best new pop acts in Europe which have achieved cross-border chart success. The winners are GuGabriel (Austria), Lukas Graham (Denmark), Woodkid (France), Zedd (Germany), Asgeir (Iceland), Kodaline (Ireland), Jacco Gardner (Netherlands), Envy (Norway), Icona Pop (Sweden) and Disclosure (United Kingdom). “Music is still a universal language that touches everyone … The European Commission supports the EBBAs because we want to help the most promising acts to reach audiences beyond their home base and to break into new international markets”, said Vassiliou. The winners will receive their awards in a ceremony hosted by TV personality and musician Jools Holland at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in Groningen, Netherlands, on 15 January 2014. To be eligible for the awards, the artists must have achieved border-breaking success with their first international release in Europe between 1 August 2012 and 31 July 2013. The EBBAs, which are now in their eleventh year, are funded by the EU Culture Programme. (IL/transl.fl)
