Parliament condemns terrorism and sectarian violence

Brussels, 14/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 10 October, the European Parliament condemned the recent acts of terrorism and sectarian violence in Iraq, calling on the authorities to “facilitate a full and swift independent international investigation” and to cooperate fully with it. All leaders and players in society should “start to work together to end the bloodshed and ensure that all Iraqi citizens feel equally protected”, state the MEPs in their resolution. They also condemn the attack carried out on Camp Ashraf on 1 September and call for the release of the seven hostages.

In a separate resolution, MEPs condemn attacks and acts of violence and persecution of Christians in Syria, in particular in Maaloula and the surrounding area. Parliament expresses its deep concern at the situation of religious minorities in Pakistan and urges the Pakistani authorities to thoroughly overhaul the blasphemy laws and the way in which they are applied. MEPs also call on the Iranian government to exonerate and immediately release Pastor Saeed Abedini.

In a final resolution, Parliament calls for the restoration of human rights and fundamental freedoms following recent protests and demonstration in Sudan. MEPs urge the Sudanese authorities to “cease all forms of repression against those who exercise their right of freedom of expression, both online and offline, and to protect journalists”. People should be allowed to have free access to internet at all times, they add. (CG/transl.fl)
