Brussels, 24/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 24 September, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle was due to sign four agreements with UNICEF for a total of €34 million to develop European support for the educational needs of children affected by the Syrian crisis in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. EU support for the educational sector in Lebanon through UNICEF has until now totalled €23 million.
With it current and future aid to Lebanon, the EU hopes to provide access to, and improve, education for around 216,000 children in Lebanese communities, to help 15,000 young people and to rehabilitate 735 schools and kindergartens, the European Commission states in a press release.
Most of the EU's funding for education in Lebanon is channelled through UNICEF, but it is also channelled through the UNHCR and UNRWA. Most children of Syrian refugees in Lebanon do not attend school. (CG/transl.fl)
