EULEX attack directed against the normalisation of relations

Brussels, 20/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 19 September, the head of the EU delegation to Kosovo, Samuel Zbogar, stated that he had the impression that the attack on a EULEX convoy the same morning - which left one person dead - was directed against the normalisation of relations between Serbia and Kosovo (see EUROPE 10925). “The inquiry will tell us what is behind this attack but we have a strong feeling that an attack like this is directed against the normalisation that we are trying to facilitate with the dialogue with the EU and Northern Kosovo and Kosovo in general”, he said at a press conference.

Like High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, the Kosovan government and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Serbia's Prime Minister Ivica Dacic condemned the attack in the strongest terms. “This attack is directed against interests and the survival of the Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, and against efforts of the Serbian government aimed at permanent stabilisation of the situation in the southern province”, Dacic said. Belgrade has offered its help in the inquiry and in the search for the perpetrators of the attack. Dacic has also spoken to Ashton on the telephone and sent his condolences to Lithuania, the country of origin of the deceased. (CG/transl.fl)
