Emphasis is on sustainable solutions for EU towns

Brussels, 20/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - The limelight, on 20 September, is on concrete, intelligent and profitable solutions for European towns with low carbon emissions. Copenhagen shows how this can be done in practice, as it is a pioneer town when it comes to sustainable urban solutions. The event is to promote the exchange of best practice between town planners and the relevant European Union authorities.

In cooperation with the Danish Architecture Centre and the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI Energy), campaign partners in the pan-European communication campaign “A World you Like. With a Climate you Like”, spatial planning officials and technical directors of European towns, decision-makers and professionals will take part in a study visit entitled “A City we Like”. They will discover a wide range of low-carbon achievements such as a waste incineration plant, a theatre, a housing complex and low energy offices as well as an urban cooling plant.

“As European population increasingly settles in cities, we need integrated solutions that ensure inhabitants a good quality of life and reduce CO2 emissions, air pollution, congestion, etc. Many of the solutions already exist, and Copenhagen really has a lot to show that I hope can inspire others. The 'A World you Like' campaign brings city planners from Europe together to share good practices so that we can bring these to scale”, underlines Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action.

Those taking part in the study visit come from nine EU member states (Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Lithuania, Poland and the United Kingdom).

Last year, Copenhagen won the European Green Capital Award 2014 and it aims to become a carbon-neutral town by 2025. The pan-European communication campaign “A World you Like. With a Climate you Like”, launched in October 2012, features success stories from 27 member states (see EUROPE 10705) and received a further 269 submissions in the “World you Like” challenge. The winners of the “World you Like” Challenge for the best climate solutions in Europe will be announced in October and November 2013. (AN/transl.jl)
