Arrest warrant - College discussion of Croatian commitments

Brussels, 02/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 4 September or on Wednesday of next week, the College of Commissioners will discuss Croatia's commitments on the European arrest warrant, a European Commission spokesperson announced on Monday 2 September. The institution is still awaiting a precise timetable for Croatian law to be brought into line (see EUROPE 10910).

In a letter to Viviane Reding last week, Croatian Justice Minister Orsat Miljenic stated that the government wished to comply with European law and make the necessary legislative changes as soon as possible. Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic then sent a similar letter to Commission President José Manuel Barroso. On Monday, however, this detailed voting timetable had still not reached the Commission, which may, in the event of a lack of satisfactory response from Zagreb, lead the College to discuss the possibility of launching infringement proceedings. This summer, the Commission criticised the Croatian government for the passing on 28 June of a controversial law excluding the Communist era and the period of the Serbo-Croat conflict (1991-95) from the scope of the European arrest warrants.
