EU funds public transport in northern Poland

Brussels, 02/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - Public transport projects will receive funding of €125.8 million under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). On 30 August, the European Commission approved the co-financing of large projects in the north of Poland - in the metropolitan areas of Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot and Rzeszow.

It is partly to modernise the railway lines and stations in this region, and partly to better connect Gdansk's city centre. The cohesion funds will disburse €47 million for this, out of the total €87.7 million needed for the project.

A new bus system will be set up in the city of Rzeszow - a bus system that is more spacious and environmentally-friendly, matched with an intelligent transport system. The ERDF will fund €78.8 million out of a total of €100 million for this.

In the view of European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn, “those two projects are tangible examples of how EU investments can help to modernise the urban transport system, improve the mobility of Polish citizens, cut travel times, reduce pollution and ensure safe and sustainable transport conditions”.
